It only becomes interesting when you look not just at list prices, but at the actual total cost of ownership.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3b145c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d3b145c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Hidden Costs: When the Cloud Bill Grows<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51d430c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"51d430c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A significant cost component that often gets overlooked in many calculations is data egress and <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/traffic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traffic<\/a>. As long as data remains within the platform, costs are manageable. It becomes critical as soon as data is moved:  <\/p><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd3ec36 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd3ec36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><ul><li>Backups to other regions or external locations;<\/li><li>Analytics or <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/bi-business-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BI<\/a> workloads that pull large volumes of data;<\/li><li>Multi-region or <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/multi-cloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multi-cloud<\/a> architectures.<\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>Egress fees, cross-region traffic, and API calls often accumulate slowly at first, but then appear reliably on the bill every month.<\/p><p>In addition, there are services that are quickly added &#8220;on the side&#8221; in daily operations: databases, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/load-balancing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">load balancers<\/a>, monitoring, specialized storage classes, messaging services, and much more. Each of these components is justifiable on its own, but collectively they create a cost picture that often bears little resemblance to the original planning, or is difficult to quantify in advance. <\/p><p>A third point that is often underestimated: operational overhead. Complex pricing models, countless options per service, and the necessity to actively manage costs (keyword: <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/finops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FinOps<\/a>) generate internal effort. Cloud architectures must be planned not only technically but also financially, and continuously optimized. These personnel costs do not appear on any cloud price list, but they are real.   <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f2675f8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f2675f8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Transparent Pricing Models and Savings Potential<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ecf43a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7ecf43a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sovereign cloud offerings based on open platforms (e.g., OpenStack and <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/kubernetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kubernetes<\/a>) take a different approach here. Open standards and open-source components reduce dependencies on proprietary services, which are often more expensive and only function within one ecosystem.  <\/p><p>Instead of a confusing modular system with many individual prices, some European providers work with clearly structured, more predictable pricing models. These include: <\/p><ul><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">included or flat-rate traffic,<\/span><\/li><li>bundled platform services (e.g., operations, monitoring, backups),<\/li><li>fewer chargeable &#8220;special features,&#8221; as these are actually needed in daily operations and not just in special cases.<\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>In practice, depending on the initial situation and architecture, savings of up to 30% compared to hyperscaler setups can be realized. Not because the infrastructure is &#8220;cheap,&#8221; but because it is priced differently and more transparently and contains fewer hidden cost traps. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4a8ddb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f4a8ddb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\"Flexibility\" Also Means: How Quickly Can I Get Help?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-559083b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"559083b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9fac2c3 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9fac2c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><p>The second major promise of hyperscalers is flexibility. Resources can be scaled in seconds, services are available worldwide\u2014technically, this is undeniably a major advantage. The question, however, is: What happens when something doesn&#8217;t work or a design decision arises that has long-term implications?  <\/p><p>Standard support models at hyperscalers are usually based on ticket systems, with globally distributed teams and clearly defined SLAs. This is efficient, but anything but personal. Until a complex problem is properly reproduced, understood, escalated, and resolved, time passes, and time costs money:  <\/p><ul><li>Internal teams analyze, document, and wait for feedback,<\/li><li>Projects are delayed,<\/li><li>Workarounds must be organized and secured.<br><br><br><\/li><\/ul><p>A provider who knows the specific environment, the systems involved, and the customer&#8217;s team well can react significantly faster at this point\u2014and thereby reduce indirect costs. Direct, competent contacts replace the &#8220;ticket desert&#8221; and help not only with disruptions, but also proactively with architecture, cost, and operational questions. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a6f759c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a6f759c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Conclusion: Are Hyperscalers Cheaper? On Paper Perhaps, in Operations They Are Usually More Expensive <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2893e09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2893e09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Looking solely at infrastructure pricing is too narrow. Hidden costs from data egress and add-on services, internal efforts for cost and operational optimization, as well as indirect efforts from support and coordination processes ultimately help determine whether a cloud setup is truly economical. <\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/only-european-providers-offer-data-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sovereign cloud platforms from Europe<\/a> can offer an alternative here: with open standards, transparent pricing models, and direct support.
