But how strongly does actual dependency in the cloud world depend on the size of the provider?  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65c580b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"65c580b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Episode 2: \"Small Provider = Big Risk.\"<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ff6897 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ff6897\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The fear of dependency touches on several levels:<\/p><ul><li>From an organizational perspective, the question of whether a smaller provider is stable in the long term and can keep pace with one&#8217;s own growth.<br><br><\/li><li>From a technical perspective, the concern that workloads may later be impossible to migrate or only with great effort.<br><br><\/li><li>From a psychological perspective, also the sense of security that a globally recognized name can be better represented to management or the supervisory board.<\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>These points are understandable. However, they obscure the decisive argument: <strong>Dependency arises from architectural decisions, proprietary solutions, and legal circumstances.<\/strong> <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b984b5a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b984b5a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Vendor Lock-in: A Question of Technology, Not Size<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5ed248 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5ed248\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Vendor lock-in in the cloud typically occurs where workloads are heavily tied to proprietary services, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/api-application-programming-interface\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APIs<\/a>, and data formats. The more intensively a provider&#8217;s proprietary services are used, the more difficult a later migration becomes. <\/p><p>This is where open standards come into play:<\/p><ul><li>OpenStack provides standardized interfaces for compute, storage, and networking. <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/virtual-machine-vm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virtual machines<\/a> and volumes are based on established formats that can technically also be operated in other OpenStack or compatible environments.<br><br><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/kubernetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kubernetes<\/a> abstracts applications into <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/container\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">container<\/a> workloads. Whether these containers run in one&#8217;s own environment, in a sovereign cloud in Europe, or with another provider is primarily a question of environment configuration. <\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>Those who consistently build infrastructures and applications on such standards automatically reduce technical dependency on a single provider. While a switch remains an effort, it becomes plannable and feasible. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4832e89 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4832e89\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Portability in Practice: Switchable by Design<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a9cd6bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a9cd6bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In practice, portability is demonstrated where environments can be reproducibly described and automatically built:<\/p><ul><li>Infrastructure defined as code via tools (such as Terraform or Ansible) can be rebuilt elsewhere with reasonable adaptation effort.<br><br><\/li><li>Containerized applications can be operated with the same Kubernetes configurations on different clusters, on-premises, in a sovereign cloud, or with another provider.<\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>Such an architecture <strong>actually makes exiting from a smaller provider technically easier<\/strong> than is the case with a hyperscaler, in whose ecosystem many specialized <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/lp-managed-hosting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PaaS<\/a> and other services are used. The decisive factor: Portability is considered during design, not only when planning an exit. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94a5691 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"94a5691\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Stability and Reliability: What Can Be Used as a Basis?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-003c158 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"003c158\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The question of dependency also touches on the stability of the provider itself. Here, it is worth looking at hard factors: <\/p><blockquote><p><strong>Own data centers<\/strong>: A provider that operates its own data center infrastructure in Europe invests long-term in locations, power supply, cooling, and network connectivity. This indicates continuity and plannable framework conditions. <\/p><p><strong>History<\/strong>: Multi-year market presence and established customer relationships are an indication that operations are not designed for short-term experiments.<\/p><p><strong>Certifications<\/strong> such as ISO 27001, ISO 9001, PCI-DSS, or T\u00dcV-certified data center tiers show that processes, security, and quality are regularly externally audited.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>These points do not replace a risk analysis, but they provide a significantly more reliable basis than the mere assumption &#8220;big is safe, small is risky.&#8221;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc323cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fc323cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Conclusion: The Risk of Dependency Increases Through Proprietary Services<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b304da9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b304da9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The statement &#8220;Being dependent on a small cloud provider is risky&#8221; falls short. Dependency arises when workloads are deeply embedded in proprietary services and exit scenarios have not been considered.
