data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For the <a href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/de\/de\/themen\/digital-transformation\/cloud-computing\/cloud-monitor-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>KPMG Cloud Monitor 2026<\/strong><\/a>, a total of 503 German companies with 50 or more employees were surveyed in April and May 2026. The representative survey included executives from IT operations, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/devops\/\">DevOps<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/finops\/\">FinOps<\/a> and information security, as well as members of management boards and executive boards.<\/p><p>The results show that the cloud transformation of German companies is entering a new phase. It is no longer solely about introducing cloud technologies. Increasingly, the focus is on optimizing existing cloud infrastructures, reducing risks, controlling costs and limiting dependencies on individual providers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e81e78e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"4e81e78e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36018a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"36018a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Hybrid and multi-cloud strategies are becoming the standard<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d4092d7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d4092d7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Companies are increasingly relying on flexible cloud architectures. <strong>63% pursue a cloud-first approach<\/strong>, while a consistent cloud-only model is used significantly less often at 14%.<\/p><p><strong>Multi-cloud architectures are particularly well established: 81% of the companies surveyed use multiple cloud environments or cloud providers<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The operating models also present a differentiated picture:<\/p><ul><li><strong>41% primarily rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/public-cloud\/\">public cloud services<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>41% pursue a balanced <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/hybrid-cloud\/\">hybrid cloud model<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>19% predominantly or exclusively use <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/private-cloud\/\">private cloud solutions<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b90f825 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b90f825\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When selecting a cloud provider, <strong>performance as well as security and compliance<\/strong> are the primary considerations. In each case, 75% of decision-makers view these factors as indispensable minimum requirements.<\/p><p>Sustainability criteria, by contrast, play a lesser role in provider selection: <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/esg\/\">ESG<\/a> criteria are cited as a mandatory requirement by 34%.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a872fbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a872fbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Public cloud is growing \u2013 integration remains a challenge<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0dfdb1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0dfdb1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The share of productive applications in the <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/public-cloud\/\">public cloud<\/a> continues to rise. Currently, 38% of public-cloud users already run more than half of their applications there. Over the next three years,<strong> 61% of companies want to deliver more than half of their productive applications via public clouds<\/strong>.<\/p><p>However, this expansion is associated with technical and organizational challenges. The study cites the most important <strong>integration hurdles<\/strong> as:<\/p><ul><li><strong>adapting the existing IT infrastructure: 42%<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>adapting business and IT processes: 41%<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>system-specific adaptations of the cloud solutions: 39%<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><br \/>This makes it clear that a successful cloud transformation does not depend solely on the chosen technology. What is also decisive is how well cloud services can be integrated into existing systems, processes and governance structures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4518a62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4518a62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cloud security becomes a strategic priority<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51f29a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"51f29a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>58% of companies cite improving the security level as the most important goal of their cloud strategy<\/strong> for the next five years.<\/p><p>Among the <strong>biggest operational challenges<\/strong> are:<\/p><ul><li><strong>data protection: 47%<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>network security: 46%<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>compliance: 33%<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>application security: 33%<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Regulatory requirements are also influencing cloud strategies. In connection with NIS2, only 20% of the companies surveyed consider themselves fully prepared so far. By contrast, 52% have identified specific security gaps and are working to close them.<\/p><p>At the same time, zero-trust approaches and additional security measures are becoming more widespread. For example, 69% rely on segmented and specifically secured network structures, and 65% on enhanced data-protection measures.<\/p><p>In identity and access management, 58% use <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/mfa-multi-factor-authentication\/\">multi-factor authentication (MFA)<\/a>, 50% single sign-on (SSO), and 45% already use passwordless methods.<\/p><p>Preparation for security incidents is also gaining importance: <strong>54% regularly conduct incident response exercises<\/strong>, and 53% rely on continuous security monitoring.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-189aca8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"189aca8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">FinOps moves further into focus<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a92818 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0a92818\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As cloud usage grows, controlling ongoing costs also becomes more important. According to KPMG, the economic effects vary:<\/p><ul><li><strong>53% achieve cost savings through the cloud.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>23% report higher costs.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>25% see no significant change.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><br \/>At 84% of companies, cloud spending currently accounts for no more than 50% of the total IT budget.<\/p><p>The results therefore also highlight the <strong>growing importance of FinOps<\/strong>: the more complex cloud and multi-cloud infrastructures become, the more important transparency, governance and the continuous optimization of resources and costs become.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-63e8ca1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"63e8ca1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Digital sovereignty is gaining significantly in importance<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46ed332 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46ed332\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Cloud Monitor is particularly clear on the topic of digital sovereignty.<\/p><p><strong>78% of companies rate dependency on individual US hyperscalers as business-critical.<\/strong> At the same time, many companies are already looking at alternatives:<\/p><ul><li><strong>45% are evaluating sovereign cloud offerings.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>38% already consider such offerings relevant.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>96% would be willing to pay a premium for guaranteed digital sovereignty.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><br \/>In doing so, 49% accept additional costs of up to 20%. Another 20% would even support a premium of up to 30%.<\/p><p>The results underline that sovereignty is increasingly taking on a tangible economic value for companies. Choosing a cloud provider thus becomes more of a strategic decision about <strong>data sovereignty, regulatory certainty and long-term technological independence<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-159d513 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"159d513\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cloud infrastructures form the basis for AI and analytics<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-522770f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"522770f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCloud infrastructures also play a central role for data-intensive applications. <strong>66 percent of companies source analytics resources from <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/hyperscalers\/\">hyperscalers<\/a><\/strong>, 53 percent use European or sovereign providers for this purpose. 23 percent operate corresponding resources in their own data center.\n\nLarge Language Models (LLMs) likewise show broad use of various platforms and models. According to the study, GPT is used by 65 percent of the surveyed companies, Gemini by 44 percent, DeepSeek by 23 percent, and open-source models by 21 percent.\n\nHowever, widespread integration of AI into business processes cannot yet be said to exist. Depending on the application area, only 14 to 21 percent of companies have already comprehensively integrated specific AI solutions into their processes.\n\n<strong>The greatest obstacles include:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n <li><strong>insufficient data quality: 41%<\/strong><\/li>\n <li><strong>compliance and governance requirements: 36%<\/strong><\/li>\n <li><strong>data silos: 36%<\/strong><\/li>\n <li><strong>personnel bottlenecks: 34%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThis demonstrates that high-performance infrastructure alone is not sufficient for scaling AI. Equally critical are data quality, governance, and secure integration into existing IT landscapes.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46d5d26 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"46d5d26\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29b6c31 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"29b6c31\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Conclusion: Cloud Strategies Become a Matter of Security and Independence<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6159de38 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6159de38\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The KPMG Cloud Monitor 2026 shows a clear shift in priorities. <a href=\"https:\/\/firstcolo.net\/en\/glossary\/cloud-computing\/\">Cloud computing<\/a> has long since ceased to be a pure transformation project for many companies. Instead, <strong>optimization, IT security, governance, cost control and digital sovereignty<\/strong> are moving to the forefront.<\/p><p>Multi- and hybrid cloud models can help combine different requirements for scalability, security and compliance. At the same time, however, infrastructure complexity increases\u2014along with the need for clear governance structures and a long-term cloud strategy.<\/p><p>The growing importance of digital sovereignty is particularly relevant. The high willingness to pay for sovereign cloud offerings shows that companies increasingly view dependencies on individual hyperscalers as a strategic risk.<\/p><p>IT decision-makers should therefore regularly review existing cloud architectures to assess <strong>how securely, economically and independently they are positioned in the long term<\/strong>.
