Are you looking for a comprehensive open-source solution for enterprise virtualization that combines KVM hypervisor, Linux containers (LXC), and software-defined storage and networking (SDN) on a single high-performance platform? Then Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE), running on firstcolo servers, is exactly what you need.
Thanks to its intuitive usability, integrated security services, and cross-site failover capabilities, the software is ideal for large and medium-sized enterprises. At the same time, its high cost efficiency makes it equally attractive for small businesses, system administrators, developers, and DevOps teams.
Proxmox Hosting VE is an attractive option for companies seeking a flexible, cost-efficient, and security-oriented virtualization environment. Especially in combination with our colocation and housing services, you can leverage synergies and optimize your resources. Criterion |
VMware |
Proxmox VE |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing Model | Commercial, paid, exclusively subscription-based since 2024 | Open source, free to use, optional support subscription |
| Costs | High licensing costs, dependent on CPU cores, features & support | No licensing costs, only support subscription if needed |
| Virtualization | VMs via ESXi, containers only through additional products | VMs (KVM) and containers (LXC) natively integrated |
| Management | vCenter (separate license), complex | Centralized web interface, CLI and API integrated |
| Cluster & HA | Comprehensive, but complex in setup & licensing | Integrated & easy to set up |
| Storage Integration | vSAN (requires license), third-party solutions | ZFS natively integrated, Ceph support, flexible storage concepts |
| Backup & Replication | Third-party or paid tools required | Integrated backup & replication functions |
| Scalability | High, but dependent on licensing model | High, unlimited number of nodes |
| Community & Support | Primarily through VMware/Broadcom, paid support | Large open-source community, optional enterprise support |
| Flexibility & Customization | Limited by licensing model & proprietary architecture | Highly flexible and open |
| Future-Proofing | Unclear roadmap due to Broadcom strategy | Transparent development, active open-source project |
Multiple storage technologies, integrated software-defined storage provides performance, reliability, scalability, and flexibility
Can be used with a single node or with a large number of cluster nodes
Advanced network configurations and multi-tenancy can be managed in clusters thanks to SDN
Centralized control through web-based interface
REST-like API for convenient task automation (infrastructure-as-code)
Easy scheduling and execution of backup jobs via the web interface or command line

Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is a complete open-source virtualization platform for servers. The software enables easy virtualization of demanding Linux or Windows workloads. Proxmox VE provides users with a web-based interface, enabling simple and clear management of virtual servers. Two technologies, LXC and KVM, can be used. The software combines KVM and container-based virtualization and manages virtual machines, containers, storage, virtual networks, and high-availability clusters clearly through the central management interface.
This cannot be answered universally, but depends on individual needs. Proxmox is a good open-source alternative to VMware. It offers a streamlined interface, supports many operating systems, and includes many features that must be paid for separately with competitors. VMware’s licensing costs have increased significantly following the acquisition by Broadcom at the end of 2023.
