What is a network?

A network is a physical connection of several computer systems or electronic devices. This enables the exchange of data and the use of shared resources (such as printers). Two computers connected to each other by a cable already form a small network. Networks enable communication between devices, whether they are in the same room or at different locations. The latter is often the case, for example, with companies that are based at different locations and whose branches can access the same corporate network (intranet) from anywhere.

Advantages of networks

Networks enable the use of a single internet connection by multiple devices. In addition, they facilitate data exchange between different end devices, as no data carriers are required for temporary storage (such as a CD-ROM or a USB stick).

Networks enable:

  • the shared use of resources such as printers and internet access
  • easy data exchange between different devices
  • the use of central data storage
  • multiple users can access applications or data simultaneously
  • central functions for management and security, such as the authorization of user access and the monitoring of network activities.

Disadvantages

  • A good network requires high-quality hardware and software, which can involve high costs for acquisition and maintenance.
  • Viruses and hacker attacks are devastating in networks, as all connected devices can be affected. Therefore, high security precautions must be taken.
  • The setup and management of large networks require high expertise in the field of network technology.

Network types

LAN (Local Area Network)
VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)
WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)
WAN (Wide Area Network)
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
PAN (Personal Area Network)
GAN (Global Area Network)
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
