All roads lead to the cloud

What the hype around cloud applications is all about and which data management option proves to be particularly worthwhile.

Cloud strategy for sustainable data management

For the IT industry, the cloud has become a groundbreaking topic. For some time now, modern corporate structures have been characterized by a holistic cloud strategy that contributes to scalable and secure data management. Upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that there is not just one way to the cloud. Depending on the needs and structure of the company, an individual approach is recommended. The choice is usually between public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud models, each with its own advantages and disadvantages to consider.

Today, companies manage an ever-increasing volume of data that needs to be stored securely. This includes not only high technical requirements for server systems but also strict data protection guidelines: These can be decisive for the company’s future viability. As a result, IT decision-makers are increasingly turning to multi-cloud strategies and various cloud solutions from both major providers and smaller vendors. The latter can also operate at the latest technical level and keep up in terms of flexibility, and when it comes to data security, they are often even ahead of the so-called hyperscalers. Due to the national and international presence of providers, location-independent solutions are no longer a problem.

Finding the right cloud strategy

The size of the company, the amount of data to be processed, or even the complexity of the IT infrastructure: Many different factors determine the requirements that a company should set for internal data management. Due to often complex corporate structures, many IT managers wonder which cloud strategy they should pursue. Public cloud solutions, whose underlying computing resources are available to multiple users, offer particularly high flexibility. This model scores particularly well with quick, uncomplicated commissioning and deactivation of virtual instances: an advantage for companies with a highly rotating product portfolio or service-oriented businesses.

However, a major challenge lies in meeting security requirements, as users have only limited influence on the choice of server location. This is where the private cloud comes in, which, as the property of the user, significantly simplifies the protection of business-critical applications. However, those responsible here face a mountain of administrative and maintenance tasks, which can be reduced to a minimum through external data management in the public cloud.

Securely into the cloud with IT experts

E-commerce and omnichannel have emerged as promising sales strategies across industries in recent years. There has been strong growth in both end-customer and business customer environments. Thanks to modern cloud applications, applications such as online shops hardly require any maintenance work that would involve downtime for consumers – and thus lead to financial losses for companies due to lost sales. Adjustments and updates to current circumstances always run in the background and therefore do not disrupt ongoing operations.

For content management platforms, the cloud also offers the advantage of making data available at short notice and almost at the push of a button for multiple locations or countries. On the path to a successful cloud strategy, it ultimately comes down to a precise analysis of the initial situation. The cloud unifies various management systems, which often lead to confusing process designs, into a cohesive whole. To embark on the right path, it can also be helpful to implement the project with the help of external IT experts. From goal setting to implementation and ongoing handling of technical issues, these service providers ensure that sensitive data is securely located in the cloud application suitable for the operation.
