How It Works
With lit fiber (also known as “managed fiber”), the provider takes over the entire technical provisioning. This includes the installation and maintenance of active components such as WDM and muxponder technology. For companies, this means a ready-to-use “plug-and-play” solution for site networking or internet access.
The three main advantages of lit fiber are rapid deployment, the planning of fiber optic routes by the provider, and guaranteed quality of service through Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Since the provider monitors the infrastructure, faults are often detected and resolved before they impact the customer.
Comparison: Lit Fiber vs. Dark Fiber
The choice between the two models primarily depends on the required level of control and available IT expertise.
Feature
Lit Fiber (Managed)
Dark Fiber (Passive)
Hardware Management
Scalability
Limited by plan adjustments
Virtually unlimited via own hardware
Cost Model
High initial costs/rent (CapEx/OpEx)
Technical Know-how
High level of expert knowledge required
Practical Example: Rapid Expansion
A company opens a new branch and requires a stable connection to headquarters within a few days. Instead of configuring its own optical transmission systems and assigning staff for maintenance, the company uses lit fiber. The provider activates the line at the desired speed (e.g., 1 Gbps), meaning the company’s IT department only needs to connect the internal router. This allows for services from 1-400G and beyond, with the provider handling the necessary muxponders and WDM technology.
Cost-Benefit Focus
While large corporations often rely on dark fiber, lit fiber offers a decisive strategic advantage for medium-sized businesses: the transfer of operational risk. The “information gain” here lies in the realization that lit fiber is not just a line, but an all-round care-free package that frees up resources for core business, as the complex management of the physical layer (Layer 1) is completely outsourced. Since there is no active signal-processing hardware from the provider on the route, certification requirements can be met.
