A Point of Presence (PoP) is a physical access point through which an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or an IT service provider delivers its services in a specific geographic area. This is typically a high-availability location, such as a data center or a specially secured server room, which functions as a connection node between the end user and the internet.
PoPs allow users to connect directly to the respective provider’s network to gain access to the internet or business-critical IT services such as cloud solutions, VPN connections, managed hosting, or colocation. PoPs often house central network components such as routers, switches, and firewalls, as well as redundant power supplies and cooling systems that ensure uninterrupted availability.
Points of Presence are either operated by the provider itself or established in cooperation with data center operators or regional carriers. The strategic placement of such access points is crucial for network coverage, minimizing latency, and the quality of service delivery. Companies benefit particularly when a PoP is located in close proximity to their own infrastructure—for example, in a metropolitan hub or at a neutral Internet Exchange.

They not only provide stable internet access but also enable direct connections to cloud platforms, business partners, or data centers (e.g., via dark fiber or dedicated Ethernet lines).
