The hum of machines and the whirring of fans: the typical soundscape of a data center does not exactly sound like music to one’s ears. Yet that is precisely what we have turned into a special ambient track: the “Datacenter Ambient Mix” by firstcolo.
To mark Make Music Day on June 21 (Fête de la Musique), we are presenting a sound composition approximately 21 minutes long (plus a hidden track) that combines the everyday noises of our data center with atmospheric ambient sounds. The result is an unusual soundscape that focuses on the data center as the heartbeat of digitalization. The track does not take itself too seriously and should be understood as a playful acoustic experiment, showing with a wink how something entirely new can emerge from “ordinary machine noise.”
For those who find themselves pondering while listening, we’ve also compiled a brief essay that raises philosophical questions: Where does human activity actually end and where does machine activity begin? What role does humanity play in an increasingly digitalized world?
