Companies migrating business processes to the cloud quickly face a problem: not every workload is suitable for a shared environment. Those with elevated security requirements or operating enterprise software with core-based licensing want both: the control of dedicated infrastructure and the convenience of a Public Cloud.
Dedicated Compute in the firstcloud relies on exclusively assigned physical hosts: resources of these hosts are not shared, and tenant overlaps are excluded. This creates a clear infrastructure foundation for predictable performance, demonstrable isolation, and license management that can be proven to software manufacturers and auditors.
A hypervisor is the software layer that divides physical hardware into virtual machines and manages their resources. In a standard cloud environment with a “shared” model, multiple customers share the underlying hardware. For many workloads, this is the right choice: efficient, scalable, cost-effective. However, where isolation, compliance, or a demonstrable infrastructure foundation are required, this model is unsuitable.
A dedicated hypervisor is exclusively assigned to a single tenant: CPU, RAM, and local storage are available solely for their workloads. Physical isolation is thus embedded in the architecture from the outset.
1. Higher security and stronger isolation
Shared hypervisors are technically mature and secure, but for environments with particularly high protection requirements, this is not enough. Dedicated Compute eliminates the risk that side-channel attacks or hypervisor vulnerabilities affect other tenants. Virtual machines run on hardware exclusively assigned to one tenant. Isolation is thus anchored at the infrastructure level and precisely demonstrable in security concepts and audits.
2. Transparently meet compliance requirements
For industries such as financial services, healthcare, or public administration, strict regulatory frameworks apply. Requirements from GDPR, BSI IT-Grundschutz, or industry-specific frameworks can be better demonstrated with dedicated infrastructure: data situation and physical access structures are transparent and documentable. This simplifies compliance processes such as internal audits and external certifications.
3. Predictable performance and planned capacities
In shared operations, workloads from different customers compete for the same physical resources. During peak load times, this can lead to fluctuating performance (the so-called “noisy neighbor” effect). Dedicated Compute eliminates this risk: since no other tenants are active on the same hosts, performance remains consistent and predictable. This is particularly advantageous for applications with consistent latency requirements such as databases, ERP systems, or real-time processing.
4. Simplified license management
Enterprise software is often licensed per physical core or host, regardless of how many virtual machines are actually running. In a shared environment, it is difficult to determine how many physical cores are actually assigned to an application. On dedicated hosts, however, the exact hardware configuration is known: this makes it possible to continue using existing licenses within the framework of Bring Your Own License (BYOL) models and thus optimize licensing costs. Additionally, transparency across the entire infrastructure increases, simplifying software audits.
Dedicated Compute offers technical advantages, but these are associated with higher costs and structural limitations that should be considered during planning.
Exclusive hosts mean that capacities must be reserved in advance, regardless of whether they are fully utilized. This eliminates the consolidation effects that make shared infrastructure cost-efficient. Operating costs are accordingly higher than with Shared Compute.
In addition, automatic scaling with dedicated hosts is more limited in certain scenarios. For workloads with short-term, dynamic resource requirements, a hybrid approach of dedicated and shared resources may be the more economically sensible solution.
Which workloads benefit?
The crucial question is therefore for which workloads the use is economically and technically worthwhile. Those who specifically analyze their applications and place them accordingly can both leverage the advantages of the cloud and optimally meet regulatory and operational requirements.
