Sustainability
Efficient cooling and 100% green electricity combined
with state-of-the-art technology
Sustainability in focus
In addition to the high quality standard, firstcolo also pays attention to the environmentally friendly operation of its own data centres.
This is mainly due to the indirect free cooling of the racks and the use of electricity from 100% renewable energy sources combined with an advantageous PUE value of up to 1.15.

With indirect free cooling, a water-glycol mixture, which acts as a medium, is first cooled with outside air. Afterwards, this medium cools the data centre area via a pipe system. This differs from direct free cooling, where the outside air is used directly as a cooling source. Finally, the water-glycol mixture with the absorbed heat can be transferred to a recooler, which transmits the heat to the outside and allows the mixture to cool down again.
The PUE value, i.e. the Power Usage Effectiveness, sets the total energy consumption of the data centre in relation to the energy consumption of the IT infrastructure. Based on the firstcolo PUE value of up to 1.15, this means that only 15% of additional energy is required for services outside the IT equipment. This includes, for example, the cooling or air conditioning of the data centre space, which are required in addition to the actual operation of the hardware.
firstcolo obtains 100% of the green electricity for its data centres from the energy provider Mainova AG. This company generates the renewable energy from environmentally friendly sources such as wind power plants. The origin of the green electricity generated is clearly documented in the register of the Federal Environment Agency.
Optimal room temperature
With a room temperature between 24-25 degrees, the hardware in the firstcolo data centres on Hanauer Landstraße is sufficiently cooled, so no superfluous energy is wasted on more powerful cooling.
Security and efficiency combined
Cold aisle containment and indirect free cooling are used as cooling technologies, enabling both economical and effective cooling of the entire data centre area. Modern fan systems in combination with LED lighting and thermal cameras that detect heat spots against poorly ventilated areas or possible cable fires ensure a safe and efficient running of the fc data centres.
Our Footprint, our responsibility
One of firstcolo's major goals is to keep the CO2 footprint of data centre operations as small as possible. In order to get closer to this goal, we have already taken the most important measures. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement. In the energy-intensive data centre business, sustainability is particularly important and we are aware of our responsibility. That is why, despite the cost pressure from our competitors, we are constantly trying to make our operations more sustainable and thereby reduce our ecological footprint.
Hence, we have decided to take a big step. firstcolo has sought a new investor with effect from October 2022 that specialises in sustainable business models and supports companies in becoming a role model in sustainability: Cube Infrastructure Managers . This is a particularly big challenge for us, as this partnership entails high requirements that are costly and complex to implement. But thanks to this outstanding partner, we now have the confidence of achieving our sustainability goals in a more timely manner.
ÖkoBasis certificate
Thanks to the ÖkoBasis award from Mainova AG, firstcolo data centres are insured to run on 100% green electricity from renewable sources.
Sustainability at firstcolo
firstcolo plants 1000 trees for the launch of R3!
With the opening of the new, state-of-the-art data centre space R3, 1000 trees are being planted in Nicaragua in cooperation with the climate protection association Primaklima! In this way, firstcolo is supporting the project "Climate protection made in Nicaragua", which, in addition to global climate protection, is also intended to support the local people by reducing the consequences of the climate crisis with new forests.
