Network Definition
A network is a physical connection of multiple computer systems or electronic devices. It enables the exchange of data and the shared use of common resources (such as printers). Two computers connected by a cable already form a small network. Networks enable communication between devices, whether they are in the same room or at different locations. The latter is often the case with companies that are located at various sites and whose branches can access the same company network (intranet) from everywhere.
What can a network do?
A network allows multiple devices to use a single internet connection. It also facilitates data exchange between different end devices, as no data carriers are needed as intermediate storage (such as a CD-ROM or USB stick).
Vorteile
Networks enable:
- the shared use of resources such as printers and internet connections;
- easy data exchange between different devices;
- the use of central data storage;
- multiple users to simultaneously access applications or data;
- central functions for administration and security, such as authorizing user access and monitoring network activities.
Disadvantages
- A good network requires high-quality hardware and software, which can be associated with high costs for acquisition and maintenance;
- Viruses and hacker attacks are devastating in networks, as all connected devices can be affected. Therefore, high protective measures must be taken.
- Setting up and managing large networks require high expertise in the field of network technology.
