While ‘shared’ means that multiple customers share the resources of a server, ‘dedicated’ in this context refers to exclusive server resources. These are available to only a single customer, ensuring that only the customer’s own projects run on this server.
A Dedicated Server is also called a Bare Metal Server. It is used for multiple continuously operated services and not for everyday tasks. It is exclusively available to a user for their specific applications (e.g., virtualization). For very performance-intensive use cases, multiple Dedicated Servers can be combined into a cluster and operated as a single logical unit.
Unlike virtual servers (Virtual Private Servers, VPS), where the underlying hardware is divided among multiple users through a virtualization layer, a Dedicated Server allows the customer direct access to the physical hardware. This ensures that the full computing power, RAM, and storage capacity are available without overhead or interference from other users. Dedicated Servers are therefore particularly suitable for security-critical applications, individual hardware configurations, and scenarios with consistently high utilization or special compliance requirements.
